Use of Aversive Methods in Animal Training and Behavior Modification

NAAB Position Statement

We promote the use of science-based methods which are least intrusive and minimally aversive. Similar to a “do no harm” philosophy in the medical profession, we strive to focus our efforts on behavior change and training methods that do not involve fear, force, pain, or intimidation. We encourage utilizing positive reinforcement and other constructive strategies rather than punishment and aversive training methods.

NAAB guides new and experienced trainers and behavior experts to focus their efforts on positive reinforcement and eliminate the use of punishment while working with both animals and their human caretakers.  For a detailed explanation of effective behavior methods, please refer to our training guide, Methods of Training and Behavior Modification.
